HAT MATERIALS & SEASONS
Are certain hats for certain seasons?Yes. Historically, May 15th signified the start of Straw hat season and Sept. 15th the start of Wool Felt hat season, but today most hat wearers are guided by the thermometer rather than by the calendar. While traditional rules have relaxed a bit, the following generalizations still apply.
All Seasons
Baseball hats, made in a variety of materials, are generally suitable for all seasons, while they offer limited protection from the elements. In addition, canvas hats are often appropriate for any season and offer some protection from the elements.
Warm Weather
Straw hats and cotton hats are most suitable for warm, sunny weather, offering varying degrees of sun protection and breathability.
Cold Weather
Wool hats are most suitable for cooler weather, offering warmth and varying degrees of protection from wind, rain, and snow. Knit, fleece, and flannel hats are also most appropriate for cold weather.
Additional features to consider include crushable, packable, stain-resistant, sun protection (UPF), etc.
